Fund for Faculty Publications FAQs
- What costs are eligible?
The fund covers author publication fees charged by publishers of books and peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. The following costs are NOT covered by the program:
- Research costs, copyright fees, and translations
- Reprints or offprints
- Textbooks, newsletters, or personally published manuscripts
- How much can I request?
Awards will be made in amounts up to $1500. Three payment options are available:
- charge to P-card;
- request check sent to the publication company;
- request reimbursement for charge to personal credit card.
Required documentation varies depending on the timing of the funding application submission and the circumstances of payment (prepaid with receipt, invoiced, or anticipated). If the application is submitted in the revision stage (prior to final acceptance of the scholarly work and prior to payment or invoicing of the same) then proof of final acceptance and the publisher's related fee schedule will be required by the committee.
- What publications are eligible?
Eligible journals must be peer-reviewed and have two or more or the following characteristics:
- It is in the Directory of Open Access Journals http://doaj.org or has a publisher who belongs to the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association http://oaspa.org/membership/members/.
- It is included in indexing and abstracting services as listed in Ulrichsweb (http://library.unco.edu/dbasesalph.htm#u).
- It has an impact factor that is considered prestigious for the discipline (as cited in Journal Citation Reports, http://library.unco.edu/dbasesalph.htm#j), or has another comparable indicator of credibility such as acceptance rate (as listed in Cabell's Directories, http://library.unco.edu/dbasesalph.htm#c).
- It has nationally or internationally esteemed editors or editorial boards with expertise relevant to the discipline or transdisciplinary focus of the journal.
Eligible books will meet the following criteria:
- It must meet tenure and promotion eligibility in the program area.
- It must be published by a reputable publisher (not a vanity press).
- It is an original work (no edited volumes).
Eligible conference papers or articles must meet the following criteria:
- The conference proceedings are peer-reviewed.
- The conference is sponsored by a reputable organization.
- The conference has a competitive acceptance rate.
- How are awards determined?
Applications are reviewed by the Faculty Publication Fund Review Committee, members of which are appointed by the Assistant Vice President for Research (AVPR) or their designee (Director of Research and Sponsored Programs). The Committee conducts its application reviews immediately subsequent to the July 31, January 31, and April 30 application deadlines, and makes award recommendations to the AVPR.
