Advising Information
See below for a collection of the advising resources available to Sociology students, both graduate and undergraduate.
Undergraduate Advising
B.A. in Sociology
A Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology includes an examination of basic theories and methods in sociology and the application of sociological knowledge to a specific concentration consisting of 12 credits to be chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor. The program includes the core courses in sociology, two theory and two research, as well as concentration courses. Graduates will be prepared for employment in a variety of contexts such as conducting program analysis, social research, and related areas.
Advising Information
Students must consult with their assigned major advisor each semester prior to registering (the advisor will provide them with the PIN number required for registration). Advisor information is available on Ursa (under the Student tab, visit View Student Information under Registration Tools). If no advisor is listed, contact the major program office for advisor information.
Minor in Sociology
A minor in sociology is an excellent complement to any major at the University of Northern Colorado. Through the application of the sociological approach to key issues such as inequality, social institutions, deviance, and family life, sociology provides a firm foundation for any discipline or career path with broader context and analytical approach.
Minor Requirements - 18 credits

Graduate Advising
Sociology M.A.
Dr. Angie Henderson (angie.henderson@unco.edu) is the Sociology Graduate Program Coordinator. Each Sociology M.A. student has a Faculty Advisor assigned to them for the first year of the program. The Faculty Advisor is listed in Degree Works in URSA. During the student’s second semester or after at least 9 credits are completed in the program, students will complete an MA Committee Application form to determine whether they will complete a research report or thesis.
Graduate Assistantships
Each semester, the Department of Sociology offers a limited number of graduate assistantships to students who have been admitted to the Graduate Program. Most assistantships pay a 4-month stipend for in-state students and are awarded based on qualifications. Out-of-state assistantships are available in some cases. Graduate assistants work closely with professors in teaching and/or research activity and are appointed on a semester-by-semester basis. Funded work is also available through the Social Research Lab. For more information, contact the Graduate Program Coordinator or email the department at Sociology@unco.edu.
