My research explores the rise of fascism, together with its counter-movement anti-fascism, through the lens of imperialism. Debates over fascism and anti-fascism have come to the fore in recent years, especially with the rise of populist nationalisms in Western Europe, South Asia, and the Americas, and the rapidly increasing cross-border movement of people, cultures, and technologies. My research broadens our understanding of these debates by exploring their non-Western origins. In particular, I strive to understand the ways in which Asian and African anti-imperialists shaped European anti-fascisms in the years before the Second World War.
