Okay, not the catchiest post title I’ve every conjured, but I’m nothing if not to the point. Here’s a little update about what happened in CETL this year. You may not believe it, but over 600 people attended CETL webinars this year. This spring we opened our sessions to folks outside of UNC, and this provided a great opportunity for UNC instructors to learn from others (it was like a conference experience but totally free!). Over 150 UNC instructors participated in CETL offerings, including 51 engaging in semester or year-long learning communities. Our webinar library had over 1,900 downloads and over 500 streams across 61 institutions in 43 countries.
So, what’s coming up next year you ask? Great question!
In AY ‘22-’23 we are bringing back, for the final time (for a while) the How Learning Works Learning Community. This is your last chance to join this learning community, as we will be changing it up and with a new book in AY ‘23-'24 (stay tuned). We have shortened the program to one semester – all the same content in a shorter amount of time. We are also happy to announce a new cohort of the Teaching for Inclusion & Equity (TIE) program starting in fall and running fall-spring. A bonus of TIE is that participants receive a $300 professional development voucher for participating. Oh, also, a little birdie told me that a learning community on Gamification may be happening this spring – more to come.
Is that it? Nope!
Get ready for the Equity-Minded Grading Webinar Series starting this fall. This four-part webinar series will cover new grading practices, rethinking grading policies, and strategies for equity when grading writing assignments (and there will be strategies for quick and efficient ways to grade writing assignments as well). Dates for this series will be coming soon, and the webinars will be offered in fall and spring. We are also partnering with University Libraries to offer workshops on Open Educational Resources and Low Cost/No Cost course material options for students. And finally, we are partnering with the Disability Resource Center to expand our Deaf Culture Series and bring more topics that will help you support all your students.
Wait, there’s more!
We are planning the 2023 Teaching & Assessment Symposium for March 21-22. We also hope to launch new initiatives such as May Learning Labs. And stay tuned for more information on the CETL Teaching Coaches; you’ll meet the new coaches soon.
Phew! That’s a lot! How do we do it all?
With the help of many, many dedicated people. A huge thanks to our webinar presenters this year – Chelsie Romulo, Cassie Bergstrom, Susan Keenan, Stephen Loveless, Kelly Langley-Cook, "Bucky" Buckhold, Mike Kimball, and Stephanie Wiegand. Another huge thanks to folks who presented their work at the 2022 Teaching & Assessment Symposium. Many thanks to our learning community facilitators – Emily Holt, Kathie Records, Sharon Bywater-Reyes, Cassie Bergstrom, Gillian McNally, Cindy Shellito, Melissa Weinrich, Molly Jameson, Ryan Darling, Darren Ilett, and Tara Wood. Special thank you to the CETL Advisory Board - Sandy Bowen, Amie Cieminski, Ginger Fisher, Shawn Montano, Dylan Kreisher, Stephen Loveless, Jeri Lyons, Ret North, Maggie Shawcross, and Leo Welch. And finally, none of our work is possible without a small, but mighty, staff – Berniece Mitchell, Audrey Tocco, Ryan Darling, and Molly Jameson.
We hope to see you at a CETL event this coming academic year. In the meantime, check out the CETL Webinar Library and the 2022 Symposium session recordings for some on-demand sessions. If you are looking for some light reading or podcasts for the summer, check out my past recommendations.
