In Fall 2021 I asked the CETL Advisory Board to think about different programs and services we should offer through CETL. There was a lot of interest in mentors or coaches- experienced people who could meet individually with instructors to work on specific needs.
Great idea, right? Yep, the CETL Advisory Board members are top notch and have amazing ideas (stay tuned for all the great things they’ll think of next)!
So, what are CETL Teaching Coaches? The program is a way to highlight the expertise of UNC faculty and share that expertise with the UNC community. It’s also a way to provide more personalized support to UNC instructors beyond our traditional webinars and learning communities. Teaching Coaches develop and share resources online and are available to meet with you to talk about your teaching. Coaches can support idea development, discuss assignments and activities, and help you solve a teaching problem.
In our pilot year (22-23) we have four Teaching Coaches. We selected these areas of expertise through a faculty needs assessment conducted in Fall 2021 and reviewed by the CETL Advisory Board:
- Corinne Wieben, Online Teaching
- Kevin Pugh, Student Motivation
- Kelly Langley-Cook, Inclusive Teaching
- Melissa Lea, Teaching Large Classes
The Teaching Coaches have spent the summer developing content for their webpages, with videos and resource lists to support your teaching. They are available for personal consultations via email, phone, and in-person (pro-tip: if you schedule an in-person consultation they will buy you coffee, and even lunch!).
We hope you take advantage of this new resource and the expertise of these wonderful teachers! Visit their pages to learn more and reach out to discuss your teaching.
One more thing – if you are interested in being a Teaching Coach and sharing your expertise with campus, please reach out to CETL and let’s chat!
