Step 5: Comprehensive Exams
If you do well in all your course projects, and you are able to post everything as
required, and everything you have done on your artifacts is graded as proficient or
better, then the comprehensive examination process at the end of your program is incredibly
easy and efficient. You are done!
However, often things are more complex: You did not get fully proficient on certain
projects, or a course instructor did not follow through with grading using the EDSE
999 rubric that is appropriate for your course project. In the latter case, our department
must help you, so contact the Program Coordinator to investigate and resolve the issue
for you. In the the former case, if your work is not up to par in all classes, then
you and your advisor need to monitor your progress as you move through the program.
If, on average, at the end of your program you are basically “proficient,” then no
worries. However, if you work in courses is frequently rated as not proficient, you
can still pass your comprehensive examination, but additional work may be required
of you.
All students should, of course, be communicating with their advisors regularly. However,
if you are having problems meeting the proficiency requirements for these critical
projects within your courses, communicating with your advisor, so that he/she can
monitor your progress, becomes more essential.
