Student Health Insurance Program

Students on the UNC Insurance plan seeking care at any in-network Cigna provider office, including specialists and consultants, pay a $20 copayment per visit and the plan will cover in-office care at 100% of the in-network charge for covered medical expenses (see plan brochure for covered medical expenses) and the $500 deductible does not apply and is waived.

(If lab work or other items are sent to an outside lab, the $500 deductible will apply).

All Undergraduate students taking 9 or more credit hours and all Degree Seeking Graduate students with 6 or more credits, regardless of the type of class (on campus, off campus, online only) are required to have full coverage health insurance. Students who meet the credit hour criteria will be automatically enrolled in the UNC Student Health Insurance Plan and the cost will be added to your UNC student tuition bill.

Automatic charges apply fall semester and spring semesters.  Any student on the insurance plan in the spring semester will automatically have coverage for summer months.

For students taking summer courses, charges and enrollment do NOT automatically apply.  If you would like to purchase summer insurance, please contact the insurance office at 970-351-1915 or email nicky.weglin@unco.edu

If you have other insurance and wish to waive the UNC insurance plan, you must complete the online waiver by the deadline which is always 10 days after classes start.

International Students: All F and J visa status international students must follow the waiver process through the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) Global ISSS Portal. Please login to the portal, go to the Requests and Forms tab, and look for the Health Insurance Waiver Request.  International students cannot waive on the UNC URSA site. You must go through the Office of Global Engagement.

If you are an F or J visa status international student and have questions regarding the UNC health insurance requirement, or waiving the school plan, contact the Office of Global Engagement International Student and Scholar Services.

Domestic students have the option to waive out of the UNC insurance plan by completing the online insurance waiver showing proof of other health insurance coverage prior to the deadline, which is always the 10th day of classes each semester. If a waiver is completed for the UNC Student Health Insurance Plan for Fall semester, the enrollment and subsequent charge for Spring semester will also be waived. If you have questions regarding re-enrollment in the UNC Insurance Plan, contact nicky.weglin@unco.edu or call 970-351-1915.

Veterans:  Check your VA education benefits before waiving the school insurance plan. Many times those benefits will cover the cost of this plan that can be used anywhere Cigna insurance is accepted. Please contact VA.SCO@unco.edu with your questions

Insurance Plan Information

The UNC Insurance Plan offers our students an excellent medical insurance option. The plan is a major medical insurance plan with a low $500 per year deductible, and then pays covered expenses at 80% in network

The plan uses the Cigna network of physicians and can be used anywhere there is a Cigna provider. The plan includes a pharmaceutical benefit, mental health coverage, physician visits and hospitalization coverage.

Please visit https://unco.myahpcare.com/ for benefit information, finding a Provider, claims, and additional resources.

  • What you need to know if you are covered by the UNC Health Insurance Plan

Students covered on the UNC Insurance Plan will not have a deductible for covered services at the Student Health Center located in Cassidy Hall. Students will be charged a $20 copay and covered services will be paid at 100%. You will be responsible for the $500 deductible if you go to a clinic other than the Student Health Center. Lab work or other services that are sent outside of the health Center will also be subject to the yearly deductible.

If you are living on campus or within 20 miles of campus, you are required to seek care at the health center first. If the health center is closed or you live more than 20 miles away from campus, you may see any Cigna provider, however, the $500 annual deductible will apply. If you need to see a Specialist, contact the health center for a referral. If you do not have a referral on file, your claim may be denied.

The insurance coverage will need to be activated each semester. The activation process is completed after open enrollment ends (waiver deadline). If you need to see a doctor or pick up a prescription prior to the deadline, contact the insurance office.

  • When will I get my insurance card?

If you did not waive the school insurance you will automatically be enrolled and charged for the UNC Insurance Plan. Your insurance card will be available after open enrollment has ended. Open enrollment ends 10 days after classes start so you should be able to access an insurance card within four weeks of the deadline to waive the insurance. Insurance cards can be accessed by going to www.myahpcare.com/unco and clicking on the quick links tab at the top and scrolling down and clicking on “Electronic ID Card”.  You will then go under the “Discover your benefits” and click on the first link “Log in to access my ID card, view claims and more”.  If you have not accessed an insurance card from here beginning Fall 2020 then you will need to create a new account.  A new updated insurance card is needed every fall semester.  If you need to see a Doctor before you get your insurance card, contact Nicky Weglin at nicky.weglin@unco.edu or call 970-351-1915.

  • How do I know if my doctor is in network with the school insurance plan?

If you are more than 20 miles from campus, you can see any doctor that participates in the Cigna Network. If you already have a doctor that you prefer to see, call them and ask if they are in network. To locate other doctors in your area visit Academic Health Plans website for a list of doctors and other general information regarding the school insurance plan.
