Plan Benefits
The student health insurance plan offers an unlimited benefit amount per person, per policy year. The policy year starts with fall and ends with summer.
The plan has a $500 deductible per person, per plan year for in-network covered charges. The deductible for out-of-network is $1,000. After the deductible has been met, benefits will be paid at 80% for in network and 50% for out of network. The deductible may be met with charges from a combination of providers, physicians, hospitals, labs and other charges.
For office visits, students will pay a $20.00 copay at any in-network provider. The deductible does not apply for services completed in the provider’s office. Lab work and other services sent to an outside lab are subject to the deductible.
The most you will have to pay out of pocket in a policy year is $8,550 per insured person.

Dental and Vision Coverage
The UNC Student Health Insurance Plan includes a $500 benefit for impacted wisdom teeth removal. It also includes preventive and other dental care benefits for student subscribers through the end of the month in the year the subscriber turns 19. No other dental benefits are included in the plan. You do have the option of adding additional dental coverage for an additional fee. For more information see Guardian Dental Plan.
The UNC Student Health Insurance Plan includes a benefit for routine eye examinations once every 12 months for all subscribers. It also includes coverage for one vision examination per policy year and one pair of prescribed lenses and frames OR one pair of contact lenses per policy year for student subscribers through the end of the month in the year the subscriber turns 19. No other vision benefits are included in the plan. An Optional Vision Plan is available for an additional fee.
