Joyous students, an oversize check for $500 and surprised and happy faces throughout the entire school. This is the usual scene when the winner of the Teacher Tuesday award is revealed.
Once a month, students, parents, school staff and community members nominate a teacher in a Northern Colorado K-12 school for being an outstanding educator. Townsquare Media partnered with Tutoring Excellence to create this nomination process that ran from October 2018 to May 2019. The University of Northern Colorado and UNC Extended Campus sponsor the award.

Since the contest started, two UNC graduates have won — Kelly Shepherd ’94 (Psychology) and Lindsey Andrighetti ’18 (Elementary Education, minor in Leadership Studies and an endorsement in ESL).
“The fact that these amazing educators are UNC alumni is more evidence of the pride in UNC’s role in teacher preparation throughout the state and nation,” said Jonathan Shaw, program and enrollment manager at UNC’s School of Teacher Education, who personally presented the checks to the teachers.
Schools have used the contribution for classroom supplies, technology purchases and many other uses that greatly help the school.
The teachers who win also receive:
- Pizza for a year, provided by Old Chicago
- $50 gift card to an area restaurant
- $10 gift card to The Human Bean
- Free game of bowling from Chipper’s Lanes for every student in the teacher’s class
