Stomach Flu, Influenza and COVID are Circulating

    Tips for prevention and care

Norovirus, commonly known as the “stomach flu” or “stomach bug”, is a highly contagious virus that is currently circulating. It causes gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines), and common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps and sometimes fever or headaches. It spreads easily through contaminated food, water, surfaces and close contact with infected individuals. To prevent its spread, it's essential to wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the restroom and before eating. Hand sanitizer alone is not effective against norovirus. It is also important to disinfect surfaces regularly and avoid preparing food for others while sick. Infected individuals should stay home until at least 48 hours after symptoms resolve.

Influenza (“the flu”) and COVID-19 are also currently circulating in Colorado. Symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headaches, body aches, fatigue and others. Vaccination is effective in lowering your chances of getting both the flu and COVID-19. The UNC Student Health Center has free flu shots available.

Students who are ill are encouraged to access the Student Health Center. The Health Center is a Walk-In clinic, no appointment is necessary, for students and staff.
