Education

Professional/Academic Experience

Dr. Muller teaches a wide range of classes incorporating developmentally-based and choice-driven instructional design and often implements Advantage Classroom Pedagogy, an approach that originated in her teaching at UNC. She is the co-editor of the reader Theorizing Communication: Readings Across Traditions and has served as the President of the Rocky Mountain Communication Association.

Research/Areas of Interest

Heidi L. Muller is a communication theory scholar who studies communication practices from a language and social interaction perspective. Her primary research focus is the educational practice of classroom discussion. In theorizing instructional interaction, her work is reflexive and involves developing theoretically informed discourses and practices of dialogic and dialectical discussion as well as interactive pedagogy.

She is currently involved in a variety of on-going projects. Several of these are interwoven strands of practical theorizing and include: continued contextualization of communication as a practical discipline through the lens of the ramifications, connections, and implications of the seven traditions meta-theoretical framework, bringing experiential perspectives into the conversation within the semiotic and cybernetic traditions of communication theory, providing access to both the idea of intercontextuality and intercontextual interaction as well as the capacity to engage in a communicative state, and articulating a theory of engaging constructed spaces.
