Journalism and mass communications have changed immensely since the beginning of the
21st century. UNC’s Journalism & Media Studies Department is designed to help students
meet those changes and succeed as the media evolve and grow.
Journalism and Media Studies
As a student in UNC’s Journalism and Media Studies major, you’ll learn how to write,
record, edit, publish and produce content for print, broadcast and online media outlets.
You can work in news, sports, politics, public relations and many other storytelling
areas across a wide variety of media platforms.
Media Studies Minor
UNC’s 18-credit Media Studies minor focuses on the social and cultural aspects of media and includes classes such as
Introduction to Journalism and Media Studies, Impact of Mass Media on Society and
History of Mass Media.

DR. THOMAS ENDRES CO-AUTHORS NEW BOOK EDITION
In February, Sage released the 4th edition of The Rhetorical Power of Popular Culture:
Considering Mediated Texts. Thomas Endres, Leadership Studies coordinator and professor
of Communication Studies, co-authored this recent edition with lead author Deanna
D. Sellnow (Clemson University). The text applies multiple rhetorical methodologies
and perspectives (e.g. Burke's Dramatism, Bormann's Symbolic Convergence Theory) to
numerous examples from contemporary film, television, music, social media, and advertising.

The Sports Reporting class led by Associate Professor of Journalism Eli Klyde recently
covered seven UNC basketball games (men's and women's). Each week one student got
a byline in The Mirror, UNC's student-run news publication. Coach Kristen Mattio said
she was glad the class came and that she is looking forward to the class covering

Explore student clubs, organizations and media and gain professional experience to
build your skills, resume and networks. Media and organizations include the following:
Gain professional experience working on this independent, student-run newspaper as
you collaborate with peers to bring relevant and timely news coverage to campus and
the community.
Students report, write, tape and edit their own stories. The show’s focus is UNC campus
news, but reporters also cover city, state and national events that affect the campus
community.
