Message from President Andy Feinstein

April 17, 2020

Fellow Bears:

Next week, on Wednesday, April 22 from 9:00-11:00 a.m., the Board of Trustees will meet to discuss potential budget implications of COVID-19 on UNC and planning underway to address those challenges. As with all Trustee meetings, it is open to the public and I encourage you to attend virtually. The meeting will be hosted via Zoom. Access information will be shared with campus in UNC Today next week. We will also stream the meeting online at unc.link/trustees and a recording of the entire discussion will be available on the same site for those who are unable to join in real time.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Michelle Quinn (our CFO) and I will remain on Zoom to address questions from faculty, staff, and students related to our FY 21 budget outlook and preliminary planning to address the expected significant deficit caused by Coronavirus.

This discussion comes on the heels of a series of conversations about our ongoing work to address the structural deficit. We have made significant progress recently by beginning the implementation of Administrative Service Centers (ASCs), Student Support Positions (SSPs), and other university reorganizations. As you know from the message I sent several weeks ago, even while many of us are working remotely, our reorganization work, and specifically, that on ASCs and SSPs, continues.

As of April 3, all employees whose positions will be impacted by the reorganization had been notified. Last week, all the ASC and SSP vacancies were posted internally and applications were accepted. Colleges and departments are now in the process of reviewing applications and setting up times to conduct virtual interviews. Final selections and offers will occur no later than the last week of April. In addition to the ASC and SSP positions, six other vacant positions have been posted that are open internally to those whose positions are being eliminated through the restructuring. We are still on track to begin operating within these new structures, albeit virtually, by early May.

If you are able, please “attend” next week’s Trustee meeting or make the time to watch the recording. As always, if you have questions about our budget or our work to respond to the many impacts of Coronavirus, feel free to reach out to me directly.

Please continue to take care of yourselves and your loved ones during this time.

Rowing, Not Drifting,
