Membership

Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing. Here are some additional facts about our membership:

  • More than 405,000 members have been inducted worldwide. 
  • The honor society has more than 130,000 active members. 
  • Members reside in 86 countries. 
  • 46 percent of active members hold master’s and/or doctoral degrees; 26 percent are staff nurse/clinicians; 21 percent are nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, or clinical specialists; 18 percent are administrators or supervisors; and 22 percent are educators or researchers. 
  • There are 463 chapters on college campuses throughout Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Malawi, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Swaziland, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania, Wales, the United Kingdom and the United States. 
  • The honor society administrators communicate regularly with more than 100 nurse leaders who have expressed interest in establishing a chapter in other countries and territories, including Chile, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, India, Ireland, Israel, Germany, Jamaica, Lebanon, Lithuania, New Zealand, Spain, and Thailand. 

MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

Undergraduate Students must: 

  • have completed ½ of the nursing curriculum; 
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.0 or higher); 
  • rank in the upper 35 percentile of the graduating class; 
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity.

Registered Nurse Students must: 

  • have completed 12 credit hours at current school; 
  • have completed ½ of the nursing curriculum; 
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.0 or higher); 
  • rank in the upper 35 percentile of graduating class; 
  • meet the expectation of academic integrity. 

Graduate Students (Master's and Doctorate) must:

  • have completed ¼ of the nursing curriculum; 
  • achieve academic excellence (at schools where a 4.0 grade point average system is used, this equates to a 3.5 or higher); 
  • expectation of academic integrity.

Nurse Leader Candidates must: 

  • be legally recognized to practice nursing in his/her country; 
  • have a minimum of a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent in any field; 
  • demonstrate achievement in nursing.
