An accomplished university administrator and scholar with more than 11 years of leadership experience in higher education, Maxey will start at UNC on Jan. 6 after serving as special assistant to the provost for strategic initiatives at the University of Wyoming. The former UW chief of staff to the president also has held leadership positions at Santa Clara University, the University of Southern California, and The College of William and Mary in Virginia. In addition, his background includes government relations positions in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
“Dan brings a wealth of leadership experience not only in higher education and in
professional settings outside academia but also as a prolific researcher,” said UNC
President Andy Feinstein. “He is someone who clearly understands and appreciates our
collective mission in higher education, and I am excited to have him join our team.”
Maxey’s scholarly work includes grant-funded research examining the influence of changes
in faculty work roles on student success and studies of higher education governing
boards. An accomplished author, his numerous published works have appeared in academic
journals, book chapters, white papers, and periodicals. In addition, he co-edited
the book “Envisioning the faculty for the 21st century: Moving to a mission-oriented
and learner-centered model,” which was published in 2016. Maxey earned a Doctor of
Philosophy in Urban Education Policy from USC. He also holds a master’s degree in
Higher and Postsecondary Education from Arizona State University, and a Bachelor of
Arts with a concentration in Government from The College of William and Mary in Virginia.
“I am excited to join the University of Northern Colorado at this pivotal point in
its 130-year history when the community is working together to rearticulate a vision,
mission, and strategic plan,” said Maxey. “The opportunity to be a part of a university
with an outstanding reputation, including for its innovations in education and a student-centered
approach, was very attractive to me. I look forward to working alongside President
Feinstein and his team, the university community, and partners in the community and
state as we define and pursue a path forward for UNC.”
As chief of staff, Maxey will be the president’s primary liaison with the campus community
and UNC stakeholders. Among his duties, he will oversee executive communication and
development and implementation of legislative strategy. Maxey replaces Gloria Reynolds,
who left UNC earlier this fall after 17 years.
