Held in early April, the competition provided a platform for teams of 3-4 students to delve into real-world ethical dilemmas, presenting innovative solutions grounded in ethical principles. Beyond the excitement of a competition, the event aims to promote critical thinking and ethical awareness for young students.
With an extensive history of ethics-based programs and curriculum, ethics has long held a position of importance at the Monfort College of Business. The importance of ethics in business cannot be over-emphasized. It does not only directly impact the business performance, company reputation, employee satisfaction and consumer confidence, but it also impacts the larger community and beyond.
Businesses are increasingly challenged to be good corporate citizens and create a positive impact in society. The importance of ethics in the business sense cannot be understated, having direct impacts on company performance, stock market returns, employee retention, employee satisfaction and consumer purchasing decisions. Associate Dean and former Professor of Ethics, Keiko Krahnke said, "It means so much to me when the future leaders care about doing what is right. It is our job to provide them with the tools with which they can navigate the complex world to make ethical decisions."
The Ethics Case Competition also allowed students to catch a glimpse of what awaits in college. Visiting students explored Kepner Hall and sat in on business classes to truly immerse themselves into life at UNC. The competition wrapped up with an awards ceremony where teams that delivered the most practical and principle-based solutions were awarded cash prizes.
In a time marked by rapid change and ethical ambiguity, initiatives like the Ethics Case Competition play a vital role in sharing the ethical leaders of tomorrow. By empowering students to think critically, act responsibly and lead ethically, MCB paves the way for a future guided by integrity and compassion in business and beyond.
