Licensure Requirements By Program

The U.S. Department of Education requires UNC to ensure its professional licensure programs meet the educational requirements for licensure in the state a student is located at the time of initial enrollment. This page provides information regarding UNC professional licensure programs. Each program lists the states UNC does or does not meet the educational requirements for licensure. Each program also lists the states that UNC has not determined whether it meets the educational requirements for licensure. UNC continues to research individual state requirements for each program.

All applications for admission to a licensure program are reviewed by the state of the prospective student to determine whether UNC meets the educational requirements for licensure before an admission decision is made for initial enrollment. If a prospective student’s application is from a state UNC has not made a determination, the student will not be accepted for admission until UNC determines that it meets the educational requirements for licensure in the prospective student’s state. If a prospective student applies for admission to a UNC onsite program offered at a Colorado location, UNC will review Colorado educational requirements for licensure.

Often states have additional requirements for licensure outside the educational requirements UNC is required to meet. To better understand licensure requirements, please review the State Licensure Requirements  page and our State Licensure Boards page.

UNC understands that professional goals and plans change over time. If a student is interested in pursuing licensure in another state following initial enrollment, please email Licensure@unco.edu. UNC will help the student determine whether their program meets educational requirements for licensure in the other state(s).

Please contact Dr. Charles Warren, University Licensure Officer at Charles.Warren@unco.edu with any questions regarding licensure in K-12 settings, including eligibility to transfer Colorado licenses to other states through reciprocity.

  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Graduate Certificate

    Licensure Requirement:
There are many types of nursing licensure in each state depending on an applicant’s education and experience. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure requires a minimum of a master’s degree and prepares individuals for various advanced practice designations, such as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). APRN license applicants are often required to successfully complete a state-approved nursing program accredited by a national nursing accrediting organization, such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Accreditation (CCNE), successfully pass a national examination in a specialty area, and complete additional experience or clinical preceptorship requirements, if needed.

Please note that many state nursing boards have additional requirements for out-of-state students who want to complete clinical placements in their state. In these situations, the nursing program must apply directly to that state’s nursing board and secure approval before the student can conduct a clinical placement. Please review our State Authorization (SARA)  page for more information.

  • Legal Interpreter Training Certificate

    Licensure Requirement:
Many states may have various requirements for interpreters to become eligible for employment in some settings, such as state judicial systems, medical, mental health, and educational (K-12) environments, among others. This most frequently includes certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or other acceptable national certifications. Additionally, certification or registration through that state’s judicial system, health or human services department, or educator licensing office may be required.

Other employment contexts may have additional requirements, registration, or certification procedures depending on the environments in which you work. Please check the state and settings you are interested in working to understand any requirements for employment. • Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling/Therapy M.A.

    Licensure Requirement:
Requirements for licensure as a counselor vary across state and setting. While there are often many pathways to licensure, a common option in many states is graduation from a program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). This includes clinical mental health counseling, marriage, couples, and family counseling/therapy, counselor education and supervision, and rehabilitation counseling.

Additionally, most states require passage of a national exam, such as the National Counselor Exam (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE), as well as completion of a minimum number of practicum and/or internship client contact hours. Advanced levels of licensure usually require additional post-graduation experience, though this varies by state.

The lists of states below are for counseling in community/clinical settings. Please note that counselors in K-12 environments are often regulated by state educator licensing agencies, where applicable, and may face separate requirements for licensure. Please contact Licensure@unco.edu for more information or assistance in reviewing state requirements.

  • Speech Language Pathology M.A.

    Licensure Requirement:
Requirements for licensure as a speech-language pathologist vary across states. While there are often many pathways to licensure, a common option in many states is graduation from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). An ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence can often be used to secure licensure in a state, and states may provide provisional licensure for applicants completing post-graduate experience requirements, such as a clinical fellowship.

The lists of states below are for speech-language pathology in community/clinical settings. Please note that speech-language pathologists in K-12 environments are often regulated by state educator licensing agencies, where applicable, and may face separate requirements for licensure. Please contact Licensure@unco.edu for more information or assistance in reviewing state requirements.
