Study Abroad Opportunities

To enhance acquisition of cultural and linguistic skills and to better prepare our students for their lives as global citizens, World Languages and Cultures offers a diverse range of exchange programs in China, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Germany, and France that provide any UNC student, including majors and minors, the opportunity to develop their linguistic and cultural expertise in the country of their choice. Students may study for a summer, a semester, or an academic year or may participate in one of the faculty-led-short-term study abroad programs. Some programs may be cheaper than a semester at UNC!

While not required for programs in World Languages and Cultures, studying abroad provides an invaluable experience and allows students to experience emersion learning, cultivate new friendships, and enhance language proficiency.

For further details on study abroad opportunities at UNC and how to earn UNC credit for your experiences, please consult with your academic advisor and visit the Office of Global Engagement website.

M.A. in Foreign Language: Spanish Teaching Summer at University of Salamanca

Founded in 1218, the prestigious University of Salamanca is one of the three oldest universities in the world. Throughout the centuries, Salamanca has attracted to its classrooms the greatest minds of the ages, including Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quijote. The university annually enrolls more than 30,000 students and awards more than 200 doctoral degrees.

UNC is one of a select group of American universities that has entered into a closed-consortium agreement with the University of Salamanca. Our Master-level graduate students take courses in Salamanca especially tailored to the needs of the American high school teacher. In addition, they live in an ancient city known worldwide for its breathtaking monumental heritage, which includes examples from many different artistic periods.

Asian Studies

In addition to intensive Chinese in China and Taiwan, or Japanese in Japan, students can also begin Korean or Thai languages in South Korea or Thailand at one of our partner schools. Students may also take a variety of other courses that are taught in English, and which can also count towards the Asian Studies major.

Chinese

There is no better way to become proficient in a language than to live within the culture, especially when it is affordable! UNC offers a variety of exchange and study-abroad options. Our exchanges at Shaanxi Normal University and National Taiwan Normal University are true exchanges: UNC students pay tuition directly to UNC, and remain enrolled at UNC, while they take classes at one of our partner schools abroad.

Japanese

UNC students have the opportunity to study in Japan on summer, semester, or year-long programs. This invaluable opportunity allows students to experience emersion learning, cultivate new friendships, and enhance language proficiency. Our partner school, Aoyama Gakuin University, is located in Shibuya, known as the beating heart of Tokyo, and provides a wide variety of opportunities to experience Japanese society and culture.
