Licensure Requirements By Program

The U.S. Department of Education requires UNC to ensure its professional licensure programs meet the educational requirements for licensure in the state a student is located at the time of initial enrollment. This page provides information regarding UNC professional licensure programs. Each program lists the states UNC does or does not meet the educational requirements for licensure. Each program also lists the states that UNC has not determined whether it meets the educational requirements for licensure. UNC continues to research individual state requirements for each program.

All applications for admission to a licensure program are reviewed by the state of the prospective student to determine whether UNC meets the educational requirements for licensure before an admission decision is made for initial enrollment. If a prospective student’s application is from a state UNC has not made a determination, the student will not be accepted for admission until UNC determines that it meets the educational requirements for licensure in the prospective student’s state. If a prospective student applies for admission to a UNC onsite program offered at a Colorado location, UNC will review Colorado educational requirements for licensure.

UNC understands that professional goals and plans change over time. If a student is interested in pursuing licensure in another state following initial enrollment, please email Licensure@unco.edu. UNC will help the student determine whether their program meets educational requirements for licensure in the other state(s).

Please note that candidates for educator licensure may need to first obtain a Colorado license and then apply through reciprocity to be eligible for licensure in some states. Additionally, some states may require applicants to have relevant years of full-time experience for advanced teaching or administrator licenses. Licensure Requirement:
All states that regulate athletic training currently require applicants for athletic training licensure to pass a national certification exam through the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC). While state requirements for licensure vary, to be eligible for the BOC exam, applicants need a master’s degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Requirements for licensure as an audiologist vary across states. While there are often many pathways to licensure, a common option in many states is graduation from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). An ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence can often be used to secure licensure in a state.

Licensure Requirement:
Requirements for licensure as a counselor vary across state and setting. While there are often many pathways to licensure, a common option in many states is graduation from a program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). This includes clinical mental health counseling, marriage, couples, and family counseling/therapy, counselor education and supervision, and rehabilitation counseling.

Additionally, most states require passage of a national exam, such as the National Counselor Exam (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE), as well as completion of a minimum number of practicum and/or internship client contact hours. Advanced levels of licensure usually require additional post-graduation experience, though this varies by state.

Licensure Requirement:
Requirements for dietitian licensure vary across states. While there are often many pathways to pursue licensure as a dietitian, certification through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is the most common. Drone Operations and Spatial Analytics Certificate

Licensure Requirement:
Remote Pilot Certificates are required to operate Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS; also referred to as “drones”) in some contexts and are regulated through the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), not by individual states or territories. The FAA UAS Part 107 certificate may be required for employment that uses drone technology. Additionally, some government entities may have their own restrictions concerning the use of drones.

UNC’s Drone Operations & Spatial Analytics Certificate program is designed to lead students to be eligible for the FAA Part 107 exam. Please refer to the FAA website for additional details, rules, and requirements for pursuing and maintaining licensure as well as applicable regulations for operating UAS.

Requirements for licensure as a counselor vary across state and setting. While there are often many pathways to licensure, a common option in many states is graduation from a program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
