Nutrition BS
UNC’s flexible, well-rounded nutrition program helps you discover your niche in a growing, diverse sector of the job market. You’ll find opportunities in health care, education, public health, social services, corporate wellness and the food industry, with outstanding options for postgraduate studies (including medical school).
At UNC, you’ll get personalized guidance all the way through graduation from a faculty adviser who helps you choose coursework and extracurricular activities that support your academic interests and career goals. Our small classes encourage plenty of interaction among students and faculty, and nearly every course is led by a Ph.D. professor (not a graduate student) who combines academic expertise with years of professional experience. You’ll get a practical, hands-on education that includes opportunities for community service and participation in research.
Degree Option
B.S. in Nutrition
This degree provides wide flexibility in course selection, enabling you to focus your studies on subjects that fit your career objectives and provide a strong science-base for graduate school. Common areas of focus include health care, fitness, business, food production and service. In addition, you can combine the nutrition degree with a second major in Nursing, Sports Medicine, Athletic Training or other health-related disciplines. However you structure your program, you’ll gain hands-on knowledge and skills through projects and observations in food service settings, community service programs and on-campus labs. The degree prepares you to sit for the Certified Dietary Manager exam, should you seek that credential.
Minor Option
Minor in Nutrition
The nutrition minor can be useful for students who are preparing for health-related graduate studies such as medical school, sports medicine, physical assistance, public health or similar fields. The nutrition minor consists of three core nutrition courses, one course of chemistry or biochemistry and six credits of electives.
Your Future in Nutrition
A nutrition bachelor’s degree enables you to pursue a variety of opportunities for employment and graduate studies. If you decide to enter the work force immediately after graduation, you’ll find employment opportunities in a wide range of industries, including education, food production, marketing, hospitality and public health. Increasingly, graduates are using the nutrition degree as a springboard to postgraduate programs in medicine, physician’s assistance, public health and related disciplines.
