Questions:

  • What do you mean by the Integrated Student Support Hub?
    • It is a work in progress, there is a working group discussing what this means for UNC
    • It is a synonym for the one-stop and it is not just re-locating offices but looking at the vision of how we support student success.
  • What is the current vision for it?
    • It is currently a work in progress
    • In the past, we have set up structures to fit staff/faculty
    • We are looking at things from a student perspective, the assumption of students now is that they are supposed to know where to go and what they need.
    • Students will go to the one-stop for non-academic Advising
    • The staff will be trained to resolve and follow up on many issues students may face
    • Students will also be able to locate new opportunities for them
    • Examples may include Career Services and Study Abroad
  • Where will the Office of Student Engagement be?
    • We are currently thinking about realigning functions
    • Also thinking about re-organizing offices that will not move to Campus Commons
  • Enrollment has grown, but what about limited classes being offered?
    • Class issues: We are looking into the issue being scheduling rather than a facilities issue
    • Our growth will likely come from off-campus and Extended campus programs
    • Housing issues: A possible solution would be to limit upperclassmen deciding to stay on campus
    • There is also a plan to revamp Arlington Park Apartments for International community
    • We are looking into outside programs to support affordable housing
  • There was an Appreciation in regards to addressing the Bias Response Team
    • UNC examined how we got here and how we deal with interpersonal conflict
    • Discrimination policies were initially borrowed for Bias Response Team
  • Many students are leaving because they do not feel like they can address and approach their faculty
    • We are currently working with faculty on better response to students in the Fall, Spring, and Summer
    • We are also working to ensure faculty have a communication plan when they are out of office
  • What is the current Bias Response process? Where do I send students that come to me with concerns?
    • We are currently looking into the process moving forward
    • As for now, Dr. Katrina Rodriguez will be handling: compliance, climate, and culture
    • Faculty concern will go through the college
    • Student concern will go through the Dean of Students
  • The area in-between Discrimination and Student Conduct?
    • The process can be unpacking the issue with the student and a possible mediation if they feel they cannot talk to Faculty
    • We are excited to have these conversations
  • What about staff & faculty training being more of a requirement rather than being optional?
    • Creation of Katrina’s position will oversee training and professional development
    • There may be some required trainings like Title IX
    • We are working on how to encourage the training without mandating it
    • We are also looking at different student conduct policies to convey to students
  • How do you describe transformative education?
    • It is an education that changes the person’s life and the lives of people around them
    • The root of educate is to lead out and not stuff in
  • What makes you come back every day?
    • There is a pride in UNC and a deep heart feeling that everyone knows who UNC is
    • UNC reflects a culture and mentality of moving forward/bring it on
  • Are we working on being proactive in communication regarding the good things UNC is doing?
    • We are currently on the forefront of addressing the issues we face with academic freedom and community
