I’d like to take a moment to express my gratitude to Student Senate for recently adopting
a resolution re-stating that the senate “seeks to advocate for the experiences all students, regardless
of definitions that may confine the existence of gender identity or gender expression.”
I completely agree with this resolution and strongly support the senate’s stance on
gender equity and inclusion. I commend the senate, led by President Tim Hernández,
for leveraging its collective voice to take this position, which reiterates UNC’s
values as a welcoming and inclusive campus community. I was also pleased that the
senate collaborated with our Gender and Sexuality Resource Center in drafting the
resolution.
UNC Board Policy explicitly states that the university will not engage in unlawful
discrimination against any person on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age,
national origin, disability, sexual orientation (heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality,
transgender status, or another individual’s perception thereof), gender identity,
gender expression, or veteran status.
The Student Senate resolution helps to validate our commitment as a campus community to these university values.
