FSI Positions
Undergraduate Student Positions
- Resident Assistants
Dates: Rotating shifts on evenings and weekends throughout the program (June 7-July 19, 2025), including mandatory dates of June 7-8 (move-in), June 10-13 (camping trip), and July 19 (move-out), and at least two virtual training sessions will be required before the start of the program (schedule based on availability)
Hours/week: Average of 35 hours per week
Compensation: $18-20/hour, plus housing in the dorm from June 7 to July 19, and some meals
Position Description: Resident Assistant (RA) positions are available this summer to support the Frontiers of Science Institute (FSI), a program for high school students interested in STEM and STEM careers. This position is a live-in staff position to support the program.
How will you be involved? RAs will:
- Facilitate a positive residence hall environment which supports FSI participants’ academic and personal success
- Uphold residence hall policies and conduct intentional conversation to create a supportive and inclusive environment
- Balance enforcing the rules and forming positive relations with the students
- Grocery shop for the dorm, provided a budget and instructions from the FSI Director
- Maintain and uphold a clean dorm environment, including facilitating student cleaning schedules and ensuring shared spaces are clean.
- Primarily engage with the FSI participants in the mornings, evenings, and over weekends.
- Facilitate activities such as movie nights, engineering challenges, scavenger hunts, etc.
- Chaperone students on field trips, including a four-day camping weekend
- Be provided with training on expectations and best practices/ guidelines for working with students, including multiple trainings before camp (virtual and in person)
- Become 15-passenger van certified at UNC (if applicable), and help transport students to activities/camping
- Work on campus week-day holidays, including Juneteenth & July 4th
- Assist with dorm set-up (June 7), student move-in (June 8), and move-out (July 19)
Position Requirements: Applicants must have a background in STEM and be a student, going into junior or senior year, in good standing, in a program housed in the College of Natural and Health Sciences. Experience as an RA or working with high school students is a plus.

Graduate Student Positions
- FSI Summer Course Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA)
Dates: One Week, Monday/Tuesday, 9-11 am – during one week of FSI Summer program, (June 23/24, June 30/July 1, July 7/8, or July 14/15, 2025 -week assigned based on availability/need)
Hours/week: One-week course (Monday/Tuesday) - 4 hours teaching & 4 hours prep (8 hours total)
Stipend: PhD student $234; MS student $204
Position Description: GTA instructor positions are available to support the Frontiers of Science Institute (FSI), a program for high school students interested in STEM and STEM careers. Applicants must have a background in STEM and be a graduate student in good standing with a 3.0 or higher GPA in a program housed in the College of Natural and Health Sciences.
How will you be involved? GTAs will:
- Teach two days of a college course on a STEM topic. The course content will be in the GTAs subject area and designed collaboratively with the Director of the FSI program. Course delivery needs to be fun, challenging, and interactive and provide participants with hands-on opportunities for learning in an inclusive environment.

- FSI Assistant Director - Graduate Assistant (GA)
Graduate Student/Faculty Positions
- FSI Research Mentors
Dates: June 9-July 19, 2025, including one training meeting before the start of the program (virtual/remote option available)
Hours/week: Monday-Friday, 1- 5pm, three to five days a week (average 12-20 hours/week)
Stipend: $750 plus up to $250 for supplies per student (mentor 2-4 students)
Position Description: One of the essential elements of the FSI program is the mentored research component. Alums of the program have shared that the authentic research experience was life-changing. We are looking for faculty, graduate students, or research groups willing to mentor small groups of participants (2-4 students). Research projects are envisioned to be extensions of an existing research program developed in collaboration with the FSI participants.
