B.S. Climate Science

Climate scientists are on the front lines of trying to understand the impacts of global warming on our day-to-day lives. Do you have an interest in:

Helping communities prepare for changes in severe weather, including extreme heat or changes in precipitation patterns?
Using data to understand how the impacts of climate change will affect our infrastructure, such as buildings, food and water supply?
Working on projects that make our civilization more sustainable, and more adaptable to rapid environmental change?

In the coming decades, there will be a growing need for professionals who understand the science and impacts of climate change and can work with communities, businesses, and other organizations to mitigate or adapt to change.

The multidisciplinary Climate Science Bachelor's degree is a new major at UNC, beginning in Fall 2025. This major is intended for anyone who wishes to pursue careers with responsibilities that include climate monitoring, and management, as well as climate change adaptation and mitigation. Students may prepare for entry-level positions in the environmental industry or governmental agencies, environmental consulting, non-profits or NGO’s, or for graduate education in such fields as climate science, climate risk assessment and consulting, sustainable development, environmental public policy and environmental law.

Course requirements assure that students have a solid foundation in the science. This includes Environmental Sciences and Meteorology. Meteorology is a concentration within the Climate Science B.S. that allows students to prepare for careers in weather forecasting.
