The UNCO McNair Experience

The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program at the University of Northern Colorado fosters a supportive academic community that introduces students to the advantages of research and scholarship. The program facilitates the development of strong professional relationships between students and Faculty Mentors, which can extend into graduate studies. To achieve these objectives, the program provides:

  1. Conduct research
    • Work with a faculty mentor
    • Design and execute a research study
    • Present findings at conferences
  2. Participate in academic preparation
    • Complete an honors thesis
    • Prepare a manuscript for peer-reviewed publication
  3. Prepare for graduate school
    • Apply to graduate programs
    • Receive guidance on applications and interviews
    • GRE Preparation Classes
  4. Enjoy additional benefits

Program Timeline

Students often begin the McNair Scholars Research Program in their second or third year of undergraduate studies. Our program is designed to take two years to complete but can be completed in one year by motivated students. Throughout this program, you will take courses with our program, including summer research courses your first summer.  Attached is an outline of our program timeline for more information.
