Identity Based Education: Where Social Justice Meets Learner-Centered Teaching
Mentor: Jeri Kraver, PhD, Department of English
Hello! My name is Tim Hernandez, and I'm a junior English major with emphases in Secondary Education and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). I am a first-generation student and was born and raised in beautiful Denver, Colorado! Once I graduate from UNC, I would love to pursue research (hopefully a Ph.D.) in Cultural Rhetoric and English to analyze diverse literature and modern music’s linguistic competence. Another of my academic goals is to continue working with diverse students, whether it be as a secondary educator or at the collegiate level, and assist them throughout the college transition. To date, I am a 2-time Dean’s List Scholar, a recipient of the Diamond Leadership Award in 2017, and a member of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society. However, aside from my undergraduate academic work, I am heavily involved on campus by being a writer for the UNC Mirror (our student newspaper) and a Multicultural Outreach and Recruitment Ambassador, where I specifically work with students of diverse backgrounds to increase diversity at UNC, and I am the Group Tour Lead for the Office of Admissions, where I work directly with middle and high school visits to our campus. On my free time (yes this exists), I love to read, write, and listen to plenty of rap music, and I once got to meet Chance The Rapper!
