Weird Wednesday Snow in Colorado

Greeley has seen a lot of snow this winter, but mostly on Wednesdays. The biggest snowstorms this year have all been on a Wednesday, including February 22nd, February 15th, January 18th, December 28th, and most recently March 1st. Data shows that 44% of this year’s snow has fallen on Wednesday. Less than 1% of the snow has fallen on weekends.

Colorado has had nice weekends this winter season, but chilly and snowy mid-week weather. 9News even came up with the term “Wacky Wednesday” because of the cold and snowy mid-week weather.

Wednesday has been the snowiest day of the week since 2019. But why? Bear News Meteorologist Sam Parker said it is mostly a coincidence, but that there is some science behind this trend.

“It is because of the jet stream that determines when we get our snow. It is called troughs and ridges. When we have a trough moving through the Colorado area, that is when we most likely get our snowstorms,” Parker said.

Coincidence or science, it seems students should prepare for snowy weather on Wednesdays.
