UNC students are reminded of the Good Samaritan Law and its importance in saving lives. It is designed to protect underage persons who call 911 to aid someone in danger, such as those experiencing life-threatening reactions to drugs or alcohol. Under this law, the person calling and those involved will not be legally prosecuted or charged. However, students may still face consequences from the school for underage consumption.

Officer Bobby Gallegos, the UNC Police Community Engagement officer, advised students to stay on the scene when calling under the Good Samaritan Law so they could provide important information to the police, such as what drugs or alcohol were involved. If they cannot stay, they can give a witness statement. Bear News surveyed UNC students and found that 75% had heard of the Good Samaritan Law, while only 50% knew it. However, 87.5% of students had never used it before, despite all students thinking the law was necessary.

One respondent to the survey suggested that UNC should mention the law during first-year orientations and put up posters in dorms and academic buildings. Officer Gallegos reiterated that the police are there to help and urged students to be confident in their services.

The Good Samaritan Law is designed to save lives but can only serve its purpose if students know it. UNC must make the law and the process of using it more widely known among the student population, empowering students to advocate for their safety and the safety of their peers. Anyone in danger from a bad reaction to drugs or alcohol to call 911 or the UNC campus police at 970-351-2245 under the Good Samaritan Law.
