If you're ever strolling by WilsonHall, let your mind wander for a second. You may imagine the neon-lit streets of Tokyo or the taste of Italy’s world-famous cuisine. That's because Wilson Hall is home to the Office of Global Engagement and they're here to help students learn more about ways to study abroad.
The University of Northern Colorado offers over 300 programs in more than 60 countries. Over 40 international universities also partner with UNC to promote cultural competence amongst students, faculty and staff across the world.
K-12 French Education student Kathryn Dobson recently took advantage of these opportunities to sharpen her teaching skillset while studying abroad in France.
“I got to learn vocabulary they use and that was something I never really got to experience before which was something I really enjoyed while using the study abroad program,” Dobson said.
Becoming an experienced French teacher was certainly Dobson’s initial goal, but the most memorable part of her time abroad was the community of international friends she created during her time in France.
“I was able to make new friends and meet people from all across the world," Dobson said. "A lot of people there were from Europe and that was really fun to talk with them."
Of course, Dobson’s trip wouldn’t be complete without visiting some of France’s iconic sights such as the Mont Saint Michel fortress off the coast of Normandy. Studying abroad is a big commitment though and Dobson thinks there’s some things students should know before booking their tickets.
“There was lots of paperwork. I mean I signed up to be a student at a completely different university so there were a lot of things I had to do to be able to do that,” Dobson said.
