The University of Northern Colorado's women’s basketball team began a three-game homestand Thursday night in hopes of finishing the season strong before the Big Sky Tournament. Three games in five days seems a lot to some, but for the team, it’s been a grind.
They began their first of three games with a win against Weber State with a final score of 72-64. With the win, they climb up to one game over .500, inching closer to the tournament.
Senior forward Delaynie Byrne is focused on winning the last two games of the regular season.
“Obviously I want to go out there and finish these three and go 3-0," Byrne said. "It’s in the back of my head that there are only three games left so it’s emotional."
For the first two quarters, the Bears were up and down, shooting 30% as a team in the first. Closing out the second, they increased their percentage to 62% before the first half was over. Carrying a 43-33 lead coming out of halftime, UNC was primed to increase their lead further.
However, the Wildcats were poised to mount a furious comeback to shock the fans inside the arena. The fourth quarter provided excitement and nervousness for the fans as Weber State held the Bears to 17 points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth quarter. The last minutes of the game provided fireworks for the crowd.
The comeback was denied by UNC in the end as the Wildcats missed the last two out of four shots to end the game. All five starters on the Bears scored in the double digits with Byrne leading the way with 19 points on 6-9 shooting.
