With the football season officially wrapping up, baseball is here to take the reins for the months ahead. The sound of cleats walking on the pavement and the bright shine of the sun signify a new day in the sport coined as “America’s Favorite Pastime.”

For the University of Northern Colorado's club baseball team, it’s a chance to start fresh for the upcoming season with spring training. Spring training is when baseball players at the college and professional level get in shape and refreshed on the game.

Universities have already played a handful of games starting a few weeks ago.

For the UNC club baseball team, it’s a chance to put the past behind them and start fresh. This spring season brings more opportunities for them to shine and prosper compared to last season.

Last season was a downer for the Bears as they finished on the season 1-11. Improvements have been important to the team as they look to take a big step forward. Junior Ben Mueller is certain the team is ready for this upcoming season.

“We’re ready to get out there [and] we’re definitely wanting to get out there,” Mueller said.

The club has a tough schedule this season playing fellow schools like University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado State University. Not only will they play in Colorado, but the team will travel to play in Florida against college powerhouses from different universities.

Junior Kyle Kahn accepts the challenge the club faces playing against teams from different divisions.

“It’ll be exciting for us this year," Kahn said. "Competition is higher than it’s ever been."

New team members have emerged this season as four players have joined the club, filling the gaps for them.

Mueller noted that pitching has made a significant improvement with the new additions.

“With the new guys, we’ve filled gaps in our pitching staff," Mueller said. "We were kind of light on the pitching last spring."

The club plays at Doubenmeier Field which is on the left across from the César Chávez Cultural Center. Be sure to support the club whether they play at home or on the road.
