Today is the first day of fall semester. And for our newest students, it is a day that they will likely remember for years to come.
Why? Because your first day at UNC is special. It is the start of your UNC education and a lifelong relationship with the university. My first day at UNC was a few weeks ago and I still feel a great sense of excitement when I come to campus each morning.
Being UNC’s president gives me an opportunity to share that excitement with our alumni community. Last week, many of us in Carter Hall helped new students move into the residence halls and we joined faculty in welcoming students during convocation. Today, I greeted students as they walked to class for the first time.
It has been a great start to the semester and an opportunity to enjoy a lot of my own “first” UNC moments. These moments are a reminder of why I’m here. UNC is a great university, with a tradition of academic excellence and a commitment to student success.
While every one of our students has a different reason for choosing UNC, one thing remains constant: once you become a UNC Bear, it becomes our responsibility to help you succeed and graduate.
It is important to me and the university that we continue to help more students graduate in four years. Along with a student’s landmark experience on their first day, walking across the stage at graduation and joining the UNC alumni community is something that they will never forget and that we all cherish.
I look forward to celebrating that moment with them and working with alumni like you to ensure that it happens. Thank you for your connection to UNC.
Once a Bear, Always a Bear!

President
P.S. I’d love to hear about some of your favorite UNC memories, including your first day. Please feel free to share them with me @PresFeinstein and with your alumni association @UNCBearsAlumni.
