Patricia Long, M.A. ’76, moved to Colorado soon after graduating with her undergraduate degree. When she began teaching, she felt prepared, but she soon learned that there was more to being an educator than meets the eye. Providing for students who had special needs was something she felt entirely unprepared for. UNC’s Special Education masters program is what brought Long into the Bear Network, but it’s UNC’s commitment to supporting all students that keeps Long engaged. Mentoring children from underrepresented backgrounds through middle and high school opened Patricia Long and her husband James’s eyes to the need for better representation in classrooms and the impact of financial support at all points in a student’s education.

Molly Burich ’05 may be many miles from Greeley, but she carries her UNC experience with pride, and is making sure others have access to UNC’s educational opportunities in ways that will help future generations dream big.

The UNC Scholarship application provides a centralized avenue for students to raise their hands and receive gifts from UNC’s generous donors. In turn, student thank-you notes demonstrate the power of donors in building up scholarships and building up future college graduates.

For UNC sophomore Armando Arteaga and a generous UNC grad, theatre brings humanity to life.

Prior to June’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on DACA, UNC faculty kickstarted a crowdfunding campaign, which highlights the ways a small gift can make a big difference in students’ lives.

Receiving a scholarship can mean the difference between completing or quitting the pursuit of an education. In 2019, 25 students were surprised to learn that they would receive an $8000 scholarship toward the continuation their UNC education, a gift inspired by an act of generosity that occurred 60 prior.

More than $13.5 million was invested in scholarships for current and future students through the Campaign for UNC.

As this year comes to a close we have much to celebrate as a community. We’ve made inspiring progress toward the Campaign for UNC goal, and in my first semester as President, I’ve personally observed a tremendous outpouring of pride and support for this institution.

The Don V. and Dwylia R. Felt Scholarship Endowment was established in 2011 with the intent to help students like Tasha Westhoff overcome financial barriers and achieve their dreams.

Pat Healey, a long-time supporter of the College of Performing and Visual Arts, is pleased to help dozens of UNC students achieve their dreams with the help of his planned gift.
