Student Success at the Garvey
Why We're Here – A Haven for you
The Garvey exists to be your haven, a place of emotional safety and belonging. We’re here to support your full growth, body and spirit as a student, staff or faculty member at UNC.
How we do it – Through Community
We build a culturally rooted, relationship driven community. Our work breaks down barriers, improves access to support, and make sure you’re seen and supported at both the Garvey and on UNC Campus.
What we do – It's all About Relationships
Our doors are always open. We host events, partner with campus and community organizations, local artists and barbers to create spaces for learning, social connection, access and civic engagement, all centered around you.
What Grounds Us – Legacy, Culture, and Action
We build on the words of Marcus Garvey. “Take advantage of every opportunity; where there is none, make it for yourself”
That vision lives on through our three guiding principles:
Umoja – Unity in community. We show up for each other through shared experiences and mutual support.
Sankofa – Reached back and lift up. We mentor, advise and build legacy through those who came before and those still to come.
Ubuntu – I am because we are. We grow together through reflection, connection, and building skills that strengthen us all.
