Become a Mentor

Campus Connections is a semester long for-credit service-learning course that engages UNC students as mentors with local community youth (ages 11-18) to provide therapeutic mentoring in a structured multi-level mentoring community that strives to prepare UNC students to become community engaged leaders. Campus Connections is open to all UNC undergraduate and graduate students, no matter your major.

As a mentor, you will spend four hours once a week with your mentee in a group setting. Together, you will work on school support, career ideas, and positive social skills. You will also help your mentee set goals and give them encouragement as they work to reach those goals.

Graduate students and trained supervisors from the Department of Applied Psychology and Counselor Education will guide and support you. This team approach makes sure mentors and youth feel supported.

Expectations

  • Come to Campus Connections every week during the semester. This means arriving on time and staying for the whole session (from pre-lab to post-lab).
  • Follow the core values and rules of Campus Connections.
  • Show respect and be open to different opinions, cultures, and experiences. Even when they are different from your own.
  • Be active, involved, and supportive with youth while giving encouragement.

Benefits

Campus Connections is a great way to grow as a leader and a helper. You will receive training on how to be a mentor, how to connect with teens, and how to build leadership skills. You will also learn about the juvenile justice system while getting real experience working with youth.

This class is unlike any other at UNC. Mentors join a team that helps youth with school, career, social, and wellness support. As a mentor, you will gain real-life experience that will help you stand out when applying for jobs, internships, or graduate school.

As a Campus Connections mentor, you will be a positive role model and give real support to your mentee. You will also have the chance to make a lasting difference in their life. Mentors and mentees often form strong bonds that benefit both students and youth long after the program ends.
