Why Should I Choose the University 101 Program?

It is an academic program designed to help students successfully navigate the challenges and meet the expectations of being an undergraduate student scholar at a research university. We have high expectations for our students and want to provide a challenging and supportive environment that helps students maximize their potential now and in the future. Studies suggest that students who participate in seminars like University 101 tend to earn higher grades and to continue in college until graduation more so than those students who do not participate. Please see our Student Achievement and Persistence Research page for more information.

Furthermore, we want you to feel comfortable here and make meaningful connections to faculty, staff, and other students. Following UNC’s tradition of personal attention to its students, University 101 courses are small in size, and each section includes a class leader (peer mentor).  Instructors and class leaders will support you individually and help you make the most of your college education and create an environment where you can build strong friendships and lasting peer networks. In addition to helping you in class, class leaders will also plan campus events (e.g., football games, study nights, etc.) throughout the semester. See our staff section, which includes all of our instructors and class leaders.

The thing I admired most about this CL is that she opened up to the class about her rough past. This made me both respect her success as a student and a CL and feel more comfortable with her as a person.

[My Professor] was one of the best professors I had this semester. I learned more than just the course material in his class because we were always able to relate the concepts to real life and how they would affect us.

[My Professor] is such a nice and wholesome person, she shows great respect to her students, but is willing to have a fun conversation with us. She creates an environment where everyone is on equal grounds, and that made me feel good. I feel like the entire class became friends in a way. A very personal approach.

This course not only allowed me to create friends in my major but also helped prep me for a college experience that I know I can handle. Study tips, group sessions, and goals are things I learned and will continuously use throughout the next 3 1/2 years here at UNC.

At the beginning of the semester I signed up to take this course because I felt like it would be an easy A to boost my GPA. I was only half right; this course challenged me to think about things that I had never thought were important to college. Everything seemed to relate to itself by the end of the semester in ways that I could not have done by myself.
