A University of Northern Colorado advertising class placed second at the District 12 American Advertising Federation’s annual National Student Advertising Competition held at the University of Colorado Boulder on April 27.

UNC finished as the runner-up to Brigham Young University while competing against other teams from the CU, Arizona State University, University of Arizona and New Mexico State University.

The class, taught by Professor of Marketing, Vish Iyer, Ph.D., is designed to function as a marketing/advertising agency with team members assigned roles to help develop goals, shape strategies, and design and execute plans. Marketing, public relations/advertising and graphic design majors are invited to enroll in the course. Its goal is to create a complete, integrated marketing campaign for the competition.

This year, the client was Wienerschnitzel, and the goal was to improve the perception of hot dogs in the marketplace by evaluating the image of the hot dog; thus, increasing the demand and consumption of hot dogs in places like restaurants and grocery stores.

The team of student presenters included recent graduates Ben Mendoza (Marketing), Ciera Freeman (Marketing), Meaghan Croghan (Marketing) and Sara Hiller (Graphic Design), though the entire class of 16 students worked together to develop the campaigns. Croghan was recognized as the most dynamic female presenter of the competition.

They presented ways to implement an integrated, promotional campaign using a $25 million budget that included a three-stage program using paid, earned, shared and owned media (view their presentation).

“These students are, by every account, some of our best students, and I truly believe they will do us proud in years to come,” said MCB Professor of Marketing Vish Iyer, Ph.D., who was the faculty advisor at the competition.
