UNC’s Blue & Gold Golf Tournament is a long-time favorite event that reaches back decades into the university’s history, giving alumni, friends, coaches and student-athletes a chance to get together for some friendly competition on the golf course while raising funds for student-athletes.
Devon Beitzel ’11, former UNC men’s basketball player, is a risk advisor for Flood & Peterson, an event sponsor, and says it’s an important opportunity to support student-athletes – something he understands well.
“By earning a scholarship for basketball that was supported by the Blue & Gold Club, I was given a great opportunity to earn my degree and make connections with various community leaders and alumni that support the Blue and Gold Club, which has helped me get a jump start in my post college life.
“For me, as a former athlete at UNC, it’s a chance to reconnect with the programs, other alumni and community members that attend, and current coaches and current players that are able to work the event,” he says.
Men’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Smiley is also a consistent supporter and attendee of the event.
“The Blue & Gold Golf Tournament is a great way to support all of UNC Athletics,” says Smiley. “I have been fortunate to play in it the past few years meeting great donors and organizations in the community. The funds raised through the tournament have helped our program in ways unimaginable. They have helped put us at the top of the Big Sky year in and year out. The Blue & Gold Club is key to the success of our men’s basketball program and the department as a whole.”
The tournament features special contests and activities, awards and food and beverages.
Last year’s tournament raised $27,000 for student-athletes. This year’s Blue & Gold Golf Tournament will be held Monday, August 8, at the Greeley Country Club. The range will open at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Register onlineor contact Nathan Docter (Nathan.Docter@unco.edu) with questions or if you’re interested in sponsoring an event.
