Student and Community Engagement
The City of Greeley promotes sustainability and encourages community members to contribute to natural resource conservation. Greeley’s Water Conservation Program is one of the largest programs in the State and anticipates a more than 8 percent reduction in water demand over the next 20 years.
The city provides a recycle center for cardboard, paper products, glass, plastic, as well as the Greeley Organic Waste (GROW) Center for the disposal of green waste.
The Poudre River Trail provides 20 miles of non-motorized recreational opportunities along the Cache La Poudre River and was built in cooperation with Windsor and Weld County.
Celebrating its 20th season, the Greeley Farmers’ Market encourages buying produce and specialty foods and crafts from local producers/vendors. Visit the City of Greeley Web site for more information and tips on sustainability efforts within the city.
Student LEAF
In April 2012, students voted on and passed the Student Leadership for Environmental Action Fund (LEAF), which will create a fund sustained by a $1 per credit hour student fee, up to 10 credit hours each semester (and up to $20 per a traditional academic year).
This fund will finance environmental improvements in campus infrastructure and educational initiatives to improve resource efficiency strengthen the campus community and provide practical career experience. A committee led by students, with staff and faculty representation, will manage the fund.

2019 Earth Week
This year’s Earth Week, hosted by Student LEAF, will take place April 15th - April 19th in celebration of the globally recognize Earth Day on April 22th! Throughout the week Student LEAF encourages students to engage in exciting sustainable events and indulge in the beauty of the environment. This year’s theme is Student Empowerment; the goal is to provide UNC Bears with the tools and skills to reduce their individual footprints and increase their positive influence on this earth!

Spring into Earth Week

Kick-off Earth week with thrilling sustainable activities, prizes and booths galore.Students have the opportunity to engage with the sustainable options Greeley and UNC have to offer, from earth-friendly clubs on campus to low-impact delicious food catered by UNC and other local food trucks! The entire event is free and there will be chances to win cool prizes, meet some sustainable bears and learn about the efforts made to make UNC a university fit for the future.

Sustainable Networking

Connect with UNC bears interested in obtaining jobs with environment focuses and careers in sustainability. This event is not only to meet potential employers but to show students what jobs are looking for students with environmental focuses.
Wednesday, April 17
Eco-friendly Tie-dye
- Noon - 4 p.m.
- McKee breezeway
One of Student LEAF’s most popular events each year and for good reason. This event is to encourage students to enjoy the outdoors with a little crafting time! Eco-friendly shirts and low-impact dyes will be provided for free, but students are welcomed to bring their own old cotton clothing to be upcycled into an awesome design!

Up-cycled Art

- UC rooms Spruce A and B
Clean recyclables are provided for students to create upcycled art masterpieces! One student will be selected to win an art gift bag along with the Plastic Picasso Award in which the design is the most creative and best utilizes the materials. Volunteers and Joelle will be around to assist students in the creation of their art pieces –no experience required!
Friday, April 20
Tree Hugger Hunt
- 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
- Starts in McKee Breezeway
This is a challenge to inspire students to explore the entire west side of campus by navigating through an app called Action Bound! Meet right at 3:30 to download the app and get started discovering what makes UNC a unique campus. Each student who completes the hunt will be awarded a grand prize!

Carbon Cube Contest

Each year the carbon cube is set up (usually in the UC) to display a fraction of the amount of UNC’s carbon emissions in each building. In celebration of UNC’s recent $500,000 solar grant, Student LEAF will be giving away a sustainable basket of remarkable prizes to the student who can guess the closest to how many cubes the new solar panels will offset.
